One of the longest running and best loved camp-wide games is the greased watermelon brawl. The lifeguards smear a watermelon with Crisco and throw it into the pool. And two people from each troop jump in and fight over the right to eat it. The team that manages to overpower everyone else and lift the watermelon from the pool at the end which they entered wins. Needless to say, the game is a little rough. At one of the games in 2001, the watermelon got slammed up against the corner of the deck, and split in half, spilling seeds and juice into the pool. We stopped the game, got a new watermelon, and finished it. But then we had a whole watermelon to decide what to do with. So, being the innovative and resourceful Boy Scouts that we were, we fixed the watermelon. And of course everyone knows the only thing capable of doing such a job. |
| And since we like the greased watermelon brawl so much, we decided to have our own. We formed our teams and began our battle. It was brutal, and long. Everyone got nearly drowned at least once a piece, and we were gasping in the thin mountain air before too long. | ![]() |

Eventually Jaime and I came out on top, and claimed the duckmelon for ourselves. We were eating our prize at Camp Merlin, had had two slices apiece, and suddenly he realized that the duckmelon didn't really taste like it should have. In fact, the taste suspiciously resembled that of sulfur-water. We had just been too happy about having it to notice until that point. |
| So we put what was left on Collin's porch, hoping it would get eaten. It didn't. Instead, it just got kicked off the porch and pulverized on the dirt. And then Bill noticed it the next morning, and made us get rid of it before we could leave for the weekend. So Collin threw dirt on top of it. | ![]() |
